SIUH/NYSNA Negotiation Update – April 19, 2021
This past Friday, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) met virtually with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) for our 11th negotiation session.
As planned, the parties discussed the important topic of staffing. As always, SIUH’s priority is to maintain appropriate staffing levels to provide quality care. To be clear about the hospital’s position on staffing, SIUH does not wish to take anything away or increase the patient assignment for our nurses. As we’ve all experienced, patient volume fluctuates over time. While this phenomenon has been magnified throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, census variability is something most hospitals – including SIUH – experience during non-pandemic times too. SIUH’s proposal is designed to responsibly and dynamically manage staffing not only by responding to fluctuations in unit and hospital census, but also by adjusting for acuity and planning for program expansion.
We are eager to continue the staffing conversation, and the parties’ collaborative approach to the negotiations, at our next session on April 21.
