SIUH/NYSNA Negotiation Update – March 24, 2021

Yesterday, Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) met virtually with the New York State Nurses Association (NYSNA) for our eighth negotiation session.

SIUH and NYSNA engaged in a substantive discussion related to epidemic and pandemic preparedness and safety. The hospital’s goal is to establish a pragmatic model of collaborating with front-line nurses in order to prepare for and respond to future public health crises. As always, the safety and well-being of our team members, patients and community are our top priorities, and as part of that, SIUH’s intent is to always do everything possible to foster safe working conditions and quality care.

Of course, during any epidemic or pandemic situation, many variables are at play – some that can be anticipated and planned for, and others that cannot. Our objective is to ensure that any agreement on this matter covers preparedness and safety measures that are within the hospital and Northwell’s control. Just as importantly, it’s also crucial that our nurses have opportunities to provide input around the hospital’s safety and preparedness protocols, just as you did during the COVID-19 crisis. We look forward to continuing this discussion, and others, at our next session on March 31.
